#NeverTooLate #StartWhereYouAre

If your 50+ year-old self needs a little motivation to start something new (or maybe restart something you gave up long ago), I give you Dr. Josefina Monasterio, and Julia Hawkins.

Dr. Josefina Monasterio took up body-building at age 59; at age 71, she looks fitter and stronger than most folks 50 years younger. She has also begun posting some workout tips on Youtube.

And Julia Hawkins started running at age 100.  One. Hundred. A year later, she began competing in track and field events. (Ms. Hawkins also took up competitive cycling when she was much, much younger – at age 81.)

  1. Yes, they say running is not as hard on your knees as was once thought. But I have a date with the exercise bike at my local 24 Hour Fitness. While in Boston in November, I upped my duration from 30 minutes to 45 minutes, and have kept up with that longer time. Key is getting the heart rate to 140 and keeping it there as long as possible. Today, however, instead of the Beach Boys, I’ll be listening to myself on tape conjugating Latin verbs — Big Final on Monday 🙂

    1. Nice work on the endurance increase! Are you taking a “spin” class, or are you doing your own workout? I did not expect to like spinning as much as I did; if it was a little easier to find/afford a class right now, I’d be all over it. Good luck on the final!
